what we do

As the only hearing-impaired vocational training center in the region, we provide quality education to hearing impaired Tanzanian youth. Many of our students have never attended or were forced to drop out of primary school after being placed in regular classrooms without support. At TARATA, we believe in their potential and offer a three-year program that equips them with the skills and confidence to thrive as independent, successful adults.

what we do

As the region’s only vocational training center for hearing-impaired youth, TARATA is committed to providing high-quality education and life-changing opportunities. Many of our students have never attended school or were forced to leave primary education due to a lack of support in mainstream classrooms. At TARATA, we believe in their potential and offer a three-year program that empowers them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to become independent and successful adults.

our pillars

education

Throughout our three-year, fully accredited program—which is completely free for students—students receive high-quality education in both academic and practical subjects. They study theoretical topics such as Sign Language, English, Kiswahili, and Mathematics, alongside hands-on training in either tailoring or computer studies. Our program also emphasizes essential life skills, including budgeting, job searching, and more. Classes are small, with a maximum of 10 students, ensuring individual attention, and are taught in sign language by teachers trained in special needs education.

work experience

Work experience is a core part of our curriculum, allowing students to apply their skills and collaborate with hearing colleagues. In the second year, they complete month-long internships with local tailors and contribute to TARATA projects, such as running our shop and teaching sign language to the community. By the third year, students undertake internships with Mazava, one of Tanzania’s leading clothing producers, where many go on to secure part-time employment.

community

Students participate in regular seminars and workshops to build self-esteem, confidence, and mental well-being. They also take part in community activities—such as sports competitions, internships, and school excursions—helping them find a sense of belonging within the hearing-impaired community and beyond. Additionally, students form connections outside of TARATA and give back by teaching sign language in local primary schools.

long-term success

To support our students’ long-term success, we provide ongoing personal and professional mentoring even after they complete the program.

student well-being

We maintain strict no-violence policies to protect our students from further trauma and ensure a safe, supportive learning environment.

support beyond the classroom

At TARATA, we aim to be more than just a school—we strive to create a place where every student feels valued and cared for. That’s why we provide support beyond the classroom: covering hospital bills, offering extra care for pregnant students, helping create income opportunities for those at risk of dropping out, and more. Our goal is to ensure every student feels seen, supported, and empowered.
